The Grand View Cheer and Dance Teams competed in the 2012 Midwest NAIA Regional Cheer & Dance Invitational this past Saturday at William Penn University in Oskaloosa.

The Viking cheer quad went up against teams from Midland, St. Ambrose, Doane, Missouri Baptist, and Concordia. Grand View finished third behind Doane and Missouri Baptist.

For the fourth straight year, the Grand View University Competitive Dance Team has qualified for the National Cheerleaders Association/ National Dance Alliance National Competition. The NCA/NDA National Championships will be held April 11-15, 2012, in Daytona Beach, Florida.

The Vikings' Red Squad earned the selection by their video-taped entry. The Vikings will next compete at the NAIA Midwest Regional Competitive Dance and Cheer Invitational on February 11thhosted by William Penn University in Oskaloosa. This will be an opportunity for the Red Squad to gain a partial or full paid bid to the national competition. The Red Squad must score 75 or better in their routine of pom, jazz, and hip hop to earn the funds. Other teams competing will be trying to earn a bid to nationals which the Red Squad is already guaranteed. GV was second at Regionals last season.

The Grand View Competitive Dance team competed at the Iowa State Dance/Drill Team Association's state competition last Thursday and Friday in Des Moines.

The GV Red (Varsity) Squad brought home a state championship in Pom and a second place finish in Jazz. The White (Junior Varsity) Squad placed fourth in Hip Hop.

The teams competed against Pom squads from St. Ambrose, Morningside, Clarke, William Penn, Central and Wartburg. The Jazz division included schools from St. Ambrose, Central, Northwestern, Clarke, Mount Mercy and Graceland. In the Hip Hop division, schools competing were St. Ambrose, Morningside, Clark, Simpson, Northwestern, Coe, Wartburg, and Central.

Both of the Red and White squads received Division One ratings in all divisions. Although competing in a smaller division, the Viking Pom routine received a higher score than both Iowa State and Drake received in their division. Grand View had a higher Jazz score than UNI and Drake.

Two Southeast Polk graduates have committed to the Grand View University Competitive Dance Team announced by head coach Stacie Horton.

Sara Mallicoat and Hannah McFarlane, both of Pleasant Hill, will compete for the Vikings beginning in the fall of 2011.

Mallicoat was a co-captain of the Southeast Polk Rhythamettes dance team where she finished in the top four of the state solo contest for four consecutive years. She placed fourth as a junior and senior at the national solo contest and was a regional dance champion last year. Sara is the daughter of Tim and Wendy Mallicoat.

McFarlane, also a Rhythamette co-captain, is the daughter of Rob and Nancy McFarlane and will study Nursing at Grand View.

The Grand View Competitive Dance Team has advanced to the National Dance Alliance (NDA) Dance Championship finals after defeating Midland University today in the head-to-head National Championship Challenge in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Vikings will compete tomorrow in the finals against St. Ambrose, Lindenwood University and Oklahoma City University.
