The Grand View University Varsity Dance Team traveled to Orlando, Florida, this past weekend to compete in the Universal Dance Association National Competition. The ladies began practicing in August to prepare for the national competition and held two-a-days for two weeks prior to the contest.

The hard work paid off as the team took home 2nd place in the Open Pom division and 12th place in the open Jazz division. The girls took a jazz routine to "Somebody to Love" and a Pom routine to "Kiss." This year marked a great victory for them when the team qualified for the finals on Saturday after performing their Jazz routine in the semifinals. This is the first time that the GV dance team has performed in the national finals.

To recognize breast cancer awareness, and a mother if a team member's recovery from breast cancer, the Grand View University Dance Team bought and designed special shirts with the message of "Dance Strong." The shirts were worn as a surprise for sophomore dancer Rachel Bascom's mother Cindi Bickel who had just finished her successful treatment for breast cancer. The team also presented Ms. Bickel with her very own t-shirt, a book about breast cancer, and a gift certificate for a massage. The girls wore the shirts for their sideline performances and their half time performance during Grand View University's Family Day football game on Saturday, November 7, in honor of Rachel's mother and all those who are, or have battled, breast cancer.

GV Dance Team - No. 9 in Nation
The Grand View Competitive Dance varsity red squad was ranked as the 9th in the nation by the Universal Dance Association (UDA) National Championship Committee via videotaped entry. This is the highest video entry ranking the dance team has received to date. This ranking qualifies the team for nationals in January in Florida.

"It was my goal this year as the coach to have the dance team break into the top 10. It is my expectation that the team will defend, if not surpass, the No. 9 ranking at nationals. The talent is there and the dedication is there," said Coach Horton.

UDA Nationals take place January 14-18 in Orlando, Florida.
