Day two of the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships has come to an end, and what it day it was for the Grand View track & field teams. The Vikings ended the day with three athletes earning All-American status.

Senior Steven Hughes (Grimes, Iowa) was the first to become an All-American for Grand View today. Hughes completed the final three events in the Heptathlon and placed 6th in the 60m Hurdles (9.05), 4th in the Pole Vault (3.25m), and 13th in the 1,000m Run (3:02.20). He finished in fifth place overall with 4,652 total points.

Follow the Grand View men's and women's indoor track & field teams at the NAIA Indoor Track & Field Championships March 4-6 in Johnson City, Tennessee.

Fourteen Vikings will compete at nationals:

Men: Jordan Adams (weight throw), Tyler Wells (shot put, weight throw), Cory Kunze (60m Hurdles), and Steven Hughes (Heptathlon, High Jump).

Women: Obsie Birru (5,000m Run, 3,000m Run, Mile, 1,000m Run), Gretchen Lamar (60m Dash) Betsy Craig, Jordyn Schertz, Melissa Dewey, and Birru (Distance Medley Relay), Lauryn Camp (Weight Throw), Courtney Heid (60m Hurdles, Pentathlon), Latasha Moore (Pentathlon, 60m Hurdles), and Chelsea Maas (Weight Throw).

The Viking men's track & field team competed at the Wartburg Triangular today in Waverly. Sophomore Tyler Wells (Des Moines, Iowa) took first place in the Shot Put with a toss of 15.17m. The 4x400m Relay tea of Titus Bland (Baytown, Texas), Matt Smalley (Altoona, Iowa), Tariq White (Des Moines, Iowa), and Pete Westerkamp (Clarinda, Iowa) placed second in a school record time of 3:27.53.

GV took second in two events; Justin Cassidy (Ankeny, Iowa) in the 400m Dash (51.71) and the 4x800m Relay team of Taelor Bohnsack (Wilton, Iowa), Drew Messerschmidt (Dallas Center, Iowa), Brian Dewey (Pocahontas, Iowa) and Nick Newcomb (Altoona, Iowa) in 8:32.95.

The Viking men's indoor track & field team had two champions and took second place at the Midwest Collegiate Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships held Saturday in Sterling, Illinois. 

St. Ambrose claimed the title with 183 points, followed by Grand View (146.5), Ashford (133.5), William Penn (112), Clarke (56), Iowa Wesleyan (30), and Mount Mercy (28).

Jordan Adams won the Weight Throw with an NAIA "A" national qualifying, meet record, and Grand View school record toss of 17.39m. Chris Nealy was the Vikings' other champion winning the 5,000m in an MCC meet record time of 16:29.28

Viking sophomore Tyler Wells (Des Moines, Iowa) has been selected as the Midwest Collegiate Conference Men's Field Athlete of the Week for his performances at the Cornell College Hilltop Open last Saturday.

Wells was third in the shot put and weight throw at Cornell, hitting the NAIA ‘B' standard in both events. He posted a best of 15.18 meters in the shot put and 15.92m in the weight throw.

Wells will compete in both events at the NAIA National Track & Field Championships March 4-6 in Johnson City, Tennessee.
