Dan Brandhorst one of four GV basketball players honored by NABC
The National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) has announced the NABC Honors Court. Four members of the Grand View men's basketball team were named to the Honors Court recognizing academic achievement during the 2009-10 school year. In order to be named to the Honors Court, an athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. Recipients must be of junior or senior standing with a cumulative GPA of 3.2 or higher.

Seniors Dan Brandhorst, Damir Dzafic, and Corey Viet  and junior Nick Wagner were all recognized by the NABC.

Former Viking B.J. Hill was named head men's basketball coach at Northern Colorado
Former Viking B.J. Hill was named head men's basketball coach at Northern Colorado
Grand View alum and former Viking men's basketball player B.J. Hill was named head men's basketball coach at the University Northern Colorado announced April 19.

Hill, who served as Northern Colorado's associate head men's basketball coach during the 2008-09 and 2009-10 seasons and was a top Bears assistant for the two years before that, was named the 18th head basketball coach in Northern Colorado.

In Hill's four years as a Bears assistant, Northern Colorado men's basketball improved from a team that finished dead last in 2007 in the final NCAA RPI report to a team in 2010 that won 25 games (25-8) and set the school record for most victories in a single season.

The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) has selected Nathan Teymer of Southern Polytechnic State University as the 2010 RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Coach of the Year. Teymer becomes the 26th coach to receive this accolade, which has been selected by the WBCA since 1985.

"The WBCA is delighted to present Nathan Teymer with the RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA National NAIA Coach of the Year award," said WBCA CEO Beth Bass. "Nathan Teymer, selected for the award by his peers, has had an outstanding 2010 season and is deserving of being honored for his success."

Corey Viet NAIA Second Team All-American
The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) has announced the 2009-10 Division II Men's Basketball All-America teams. Players are selected by the All-America committee.

For the second time, Grand View senior forward Corey Viet (Ackley, Iowa) was selected to the NAIA All-America Second Team. Viet was also a Second Team selection in 2008-09.

Viet, a First Team All-MCC selection, led the Vikings this season in scoring (17.5 ppg) and was second in rebounding (6.27 rpg). He was among NAIA leaders in free throw percentage (19th - 83.7%), field goal percentage (26th - 55.8%), and total scoring (552). In just two years at Grand View, Viet scored his 1,000th career point this season.

The University of Sioux Falls (S.D.) used a late 8-0 rally to force overtime and then went on to defeat #16 Grand View (Iowa) 69-65 in the first game of the 2010 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship.

Trailing 53-44 with under three minutes to go in regulation, USF forward Kelly Hubbard scored five straight points to cut the lead to four. After a Vikings turnover, USF guard Matt Malloy nailed a three-pointer, the first of the game for the Cougars, to make it a one point game. The teams exchanged baskets and with Grand View leading by one, Vikings guard Grant Burns converted 1-of-2 free throws to lead 56-54 with 20 seconds left. USF, however, tied the game off another basket by Malloy and Grand View came up empty on two attempts to win it regulation.
