14th Season

Coach Monner begins his fourteenth year as the head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country program at Grand View University.  Over the past five seasons, he has guided seven individuals to the NAIA National Championships, had seven athletes earn All-Conference honors and seven athletes earn All-Conference Honorable Mention accolades.

During the 2011 season, he coached the Viking women to a first place finish at the MCC conference championships qualifying them for their first ever team berth to the NAIA National Championships ending the season as the 24th ranked team in the nation.  That 2011 season was also highlighted by Obsie Birru being crowned the NAIA National Champion earning All-American honors for her fourth consecutive season.

In his tenure at Grand View, Monner has coached 44 runners to All-Conference honors, 21 NAIA individual national qualifiers, 5 individual conference champions, 4 NAIA All-Americans, and one National Champion in cross country.  In 2005 he was named the MCC men’s coach of the year and in 2011 he was named the conference women’s coach of the year after guiding both teams to the MCC titles.

Along with his cross country and track & field coaching duties, Monner has served as the Heart of America Athletic Conference Track & Field chair and is a member of the NAIA-Track & Field Coaches Association Executive Committee where he is currently serving as Past President.  He previously served as a member of the NAIA indoor games committee, chair of the NAIA standards committee and has also served as the chair for the NAIA events committee. 

Prior to arriving at Grand View, Monner was the head cross country and track & field coach at the University of Minnesota-Morris where he guided the women’s program to their first ever conference title in track & field during the 2004 season.  He also has been on staff as an assistant track & field coach at Loras College and Iowa Wesleyan.

A native of Andrew, Iowa, Monner holds a bachelor’s degree in sport management and physical education and has a master’s degree in athletic administration.  He and his wife Debra reside in the Des Moines metro area.
