Mike Woodley Image
Mike Woodley - Head Coach - 4th Season

Coach Mike Woodley begins his fourth season with the Vikings and his 37th year as a football coach. In 2010, Woodley produced four All-Americans at Grand View. He was selected as the 2009 MSFA Coach of the Year after an 8-3 overall and 6-1 MSFA season. Grand View also broke into the NAIA Top 25 Rankings in 2009 and was ranked for five consecutive weeks, as high as the No. 17 team in the nation. The Vikings were ranked as the No. 21 team in the NAIA Postseason Poll and the NAIA 2010 Spring Poll. Grand View starts off the 2011 season ranked No. 25 in the NAIA Preseason Poll.

Founder of Viking football, Woodley has spent 30 of his 35 seasons coaching in Iowa: graduate assistant at the University of Iowa, assistant coach at Waterloo East High School, head coach at Osage High School, head coach at St. Ambrose University, and a nine-year assistant coach at Iowa State University. Prior to Grand View, he spent four years as the athletic director and head football coach at Sam Rayburn High School in Houston, Texas.

Woodley is an inductee to the Iowa High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and is a Hall of Fame member of the University of Northern Iowa, where he was an All-American, and Waterloo East High School. He won coach of the year honors at each school he coached and was the NAIA District 15 Coach of the Year while at St. Ambrose after his team earned a victory over IAA power Western Illinois.

Woodley's name is synonymous with athletics in the state of Iowa as his sons are all involved in coaching. Brian is the head football coach at Johnston High School; Joe serves as Grand View's defensive coordinator; Matt is the head men's basketball coach at Truman State.

Woodley resides in Urbandale with his wife, Betsy.


Nick Benedetto - Assistant Coach - 1st Season

Nick Benedetto begins his first year at Grand View as the defensive backs coach.

Benedetto comes to Grand View from the University of South Dakota where he served as an assistant coach for the cornerbacks as well as the technology and video coordinator from 2009 to 2011.  He was part of a team that had upset victories against FBS University of Minnesota 41-38 in 2010 and Eastern Washington (Ranked #1 in FCS poll) 30-17 in 2011.  Coach Benedetto coached two all-conference cornerbacks during his time at the University of South Dakota.

A native of Crystal Lake, Ill., Benedetto played his collegiate career at the University of Sioux Falls. As a standout defensive back, he finished with 94 tackles, seven interceptions and 32 passes defended. He helped USF claim two NAIA national championships in 2008 and 2006 and runner-up honors in 2007. He was the 2008 Team Defensive Captain and was part of a defense that ranked #1 in 9 out of 10 defensive statistical categories.  Benedetto was part of a 52-3 record while playing at the University of Sioux Falls.

Following his collegiate career, Benedetto played for the arena football team the Sioux Falls Storm as a defensive back for the 2009 season.              

Benedetto earned his bachelor's degree in Mathematics from University of Sioux Falls in 2009 and his Master's degree in Sports Management in 2011.   


Austin Flynn - Assistant Coach - 1st Season

Austin Flynn enters his first season with Grand View. He was a four-year standout for Iowa State University from 2002-2006 as quarterback and wide receiver. He threw for more than 1,000 yards during his two years as quarterback before transitioning to a wide receiver.

Following his stellar collegiate career, Flynn was invited to the Baltimore Ravens Rookie Tryout in 2006. Later he turned his interests toward coaching and he began his career at South Houston High School as a wide receiver and defensive backs coach. After just one season at South Houston, he was promoted to defensive coordinator while continuing to coach the defensive backs.

Flynn and his wife, Jana, have a son, Ethan. 


Nick Linder - Assistant Coach - 1st Season

Nick Linder begins his first year at Grand View as a defensive backs coach. Previously, Linder spent two seasons at San Diego State University as a graduate assistant where he worked primarily with defensive backs. Prior to his coaching stint with the Aztecs he was a student assistant at Iowa State University for three seasons. He also held coaching positions at Drake University and Saint Ambrose University as a secondary and special teams coach.

Linder earned his bachelor's degree in exercise sports science from Iowa State in 2004. He was a three-year letter winner at ISU where he excelled as a defensive back. He earned special teams MVP and was named a captain during his final season as a Cyclone. While at ISU, he was part of three bowl appearances in 2000, 2001, and 2002.

Joe Woodley - Assistant Coach - 4th Season

Joe Woodley is in his fourth year as defensive coordinator for the Vikings. Woodley was instrumental in Grand View's second place MSFA finish with a 6-1 record in 2009 and was selected as the MSFA Assistant Coach of the Year. The Vikings were 8-3 overall in 2009 and Woodley coached GV's first football All-American, defensive back Titus Bland, who was selected to both the NAIA and AFCA All-American teams.

From 2008 to 2009, Woodley helped the Vikings improve in every defensive statistical category. He was named 2009 Mid-States Football Association Assistant Coach of the Year. In 2010, GV's defense improved once again and was ranked nationally in the following categories: fourth in scoring defense (14.7), third total defense (248.8), third pass defense (132.9), and 22nd in rush defense (115.9). Since 2009, Woodley has coached 12 All-Conference players, a Conference Player of the Year, and had three All-Americans.

Prior to GV, Woodley spent the 2006 and 2007 seasons as the defensive line and linebacker coach for Johnston High School under his brother, Brian, who is the head coach. The Dragons were 7-2 in 2007–the best record in program history. Before Johnston, Woodley spent two seasons at St. Ambrose University where he coached the defensive backs and linebackers. During his two years at St. Ambrose, the Bees were 15-5, in the top ten in the nation defensively, and made a playoff appearance. He coached under Todd Sturdy who is now the offensive coordinator at Washington State.

A West Des Moines, Iowa, native, Woodley was both a First-Team Elite All-State Linebacker and Central Iowa Metro League (CIML) Player of the Year for the Valley High School Tigers in 1998. He played college football for Iowa State University from 1999-2003. He was a team captain and played in three bowl games: the Insight Bowl, the Independence Bowl, and the Humanitarian Bowl.

Woodley's recruiting areas include Central Iowa, Iowa Central Community College, and Houston, Texas. He resides in Grimes with his wife, Jen, and daughters, Anna and Elly.

Tom Barnabo - Assistant Coach - 4th Season

Fourth year defensive line coach Tom Barnabo is the physical education teacher at Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, a position he has held since 1996. At Dowling, Barnabo served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. His teams won back-to-back state football championships and went 26-0 in 2000 and 2001. He spent the past four years coaching at Urbandale High School as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.

Barnabo graduated in 1982 from Parker High School in Janesville, Wis. He was an All-State Linebacker and All-State Shrine Bowl participant. He played football at Drake University from 1982-87 and then served as a graduate assistant football coach at Montana State University from 1987-89. He was the defensive coordinator at Lake Worth High School (Fla.) in 1989-90 before going to Simpson College where he served as the linebackers coach for the Storm in 1990-92. During his two seasons at Simpson, the Storm won conference titles, NCAA playoff berths, and had a 19-3 record. Barnabo coached at Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, Texas, from 1992-96.

Barnabo resides in West Des Moines with his sons, Dalton and Cole.

Jon Pilcher - Assistant Coach - 4th Season

Jon Pilcher was head coach at Nevada and Louisa-Muscatine High Schools for three seasons. He spent eight years as an assistant football coach at Nevada, Muscatine, and Mountain Grove High Schools, and one year as an assistant coach at Iowa Central Community College.

As a player, Pilcher was a two-year First-Team All-Conference selection and a Des Moines Register All-State Lineman. He was a three-year starter for the University of Northern Iowa where he received all-conference recognition and the Oil Can Award his senior year.

Pilcher holds a bachelor's degree in physical education from the University of Northern Iowa. He completed his Master of Sport Science degree in sport management from the United States Sports Academy and is currently working on his school administration endorsement through Viterbo University.

Pilcher resides in Ankeny with his wife, Michelle, and three children, Grayden, Maya and Brock. 


Andy Jepson Image
Andy Jepson - Assistant Coach - 4th Season

Andy Jepson begins his fourth year coaching the quarterbacks. Through the first three years of the program, the Viking quarterbacks have thrown for 4,463 yards and 39 touchdowns.

Jepson was a two-year starting quarterback for Iowa Central Community College in 1996-97 where he earned All-Region and Academic All-American recognition. He continued his playing career at Cal Poly State where he was a starter, two-year letter winner and team captain. Following college, Jepson played two seasons in the Arena Football League with the Sioux Falls Cobras and Iowa Barnstormers.

Jepson has worked for Wells Fargo for nine years. He graduated from Cal Poly State in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree.

He resides in Des Moines with his wife, Krista, son, Jack, and daughter, Willow.

Dave Grubb - Assistant Coach - 4th Season

Dave Grubb began his coaching career in 1979 at Chaparral Middle School (N.M.) and later became the head coach at Wathena High School (Kan.). He spent the past 24 years coaching in Iowa.

Grubb is a 1979 graduate of Buena Vista University where he participated in football and wrestling. He holds a bachelor's degree in physical education K-12 and minors in speech and drama.

Grubb resides in Elkhart with his wife, Sherryl. 

                         

Heath Zuck Image
Heath Zuck - Assistant Coach - 4th Season

Heath Zuck begins his fourth year at Grand View as the running backs and kickers coach. He coached Viking running back Darryl Ford, 1,000 yard rusher and 2009 First-Team All-MSFA Conference Running Back.

Zuck began his coaching career in 2002 as an assistant at Wapsie Valley High School. He assisted as the offensive and defensive line coach, as well as the kicking and punting coach. Zuck played at Upper Iowa University in the fall of 2003. He was a two-way starter as the kicker and punter for the Peacocks' Special Teams. In 2004, he returned as an assistant to Wapsie Valley High School until the fall of 2007. The Warriors were 12-1 and state runner-up in 2006, along with a 13-0 record and state championship in 2007.

A Fairbank, Iowa, native and Wapsie Valley alum, Zuck was a two-time First-Team All-District player in 1998 and 1999, along with Honorable Mention All-State for the Warriors in 1999. He was also a member of the Warriors' 1997 state championship team. He won championships both as a player and a coach while at Wapsie Valley High School.

Zuck obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Northern Iowa with a major in exercise science, emphasis in strength and conditioning/ power development. He is currently the Wellness Director at Scottish Rite Park in Des Moines.

Zuck resides in Ankeny with his wife, Malynda, and daughters, Kyra and Lyndee.

Tyler Andersen - Assistant Coach - 2nd Season

Tyler Andersen begins his second year as assistant defensive line coach for the Vikings. He was a First-Team MSFA defensive end and team captain for Grand View in 2009. A Madrid native, Andersen transferred from Iowa Central Community College where he spent two seasons playing football for the Tritons. He graduated in 2011 with a bachelor's degree in business administration and marketing from Grand View.
