Garey Smith - Head Coach - 12th Season

Garey Smith will be entering his twelfth season at Grand View. Smith has led the Vikings to three trips to the conference championship game and advancing to the NAIA National Tournament in 2003 and 2010. The Vikings had the most successful season in program history in 2009-10, advancing to the Elite 8 of the NAIA Championships.

A native of Nevada, Iowa, Smith came to the Vikings from William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa. In 18 seasons at William Penn, he coached the Statesmen to six Iowa Conference titles and five NCAA Division III tournament appearances. Smith coached eight NCAA Division III All-Americans, twelve 1,000-point scorers and one 2,000-point scorer. He was honored in 1986, 1988, and 1989 with the Converse Regional Coach of the Year award.

Smith is a 1974 and 1986 graduate of Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri. His first head coaching job was with Fairfax H.S. in Fairfax, Missouri, where he led the team to the 1980 state championship. In 1989, Smith was inducted into the Missouri High School Coach's Hall of Fame.

Coach Smith resides in Maxwell with his wife Carole.

Courtney Boyd - Assistant Coach - 1st Season

Courtney Boyd enters her first season as assistant coach at Grand View.

Boyd comes to Grand View after a very successful collegiate career. She played at Kirkwood Community College from 2005-07 where she was the starting point guard on Kirkwood's 2006-07 National Championship Team that had a season record of 35-1. Her career playing record at Kirkwood was 67-6.

After Kirkwood, Boyd transferred to NCAA Div II Dixie State College in St. George, Utah. In just two seasons at Dixie State, Boyd became the school career leader in assists with 232. She is still second on the all-time list for three-point goals made, third on the all-time list for steals, and holds the record for three-point goals scored in a game with seven. Boyd was the Dixie State Newcomer of the Year in 2007-08 and the Female Athlete of the Year in 2008-09.

Boyd graduated from Dixie State College in December 2009 with a Bachelor of Science degree in elementary education with an ESL endorsement.

Trent Smith - Assistant Coach - 2nd Season

Trent Smith enters his second season with the Vikings as a varsity assistant and head JV coach. Prior to Grand View, Smith spent two years as an assistant girls' basketball coach at Saydel High School. In addition to coaching at Grand View, Smith is the head boys' tennis coach at Des Moines East High School and the assistant baseball coach at North High School.

Brent Walker - Assistant Coach - 4th Season

After spending five seasons as a high school coach in Central Iowa, Brent Walker joined the Viking staff in 2008. He enters his fourth year as an assistant varsity basketball coach.

While at Grand View, Walker has played a significant role in the recruiting process for the women's basketball program. He has been a part of one of the most successful teams in Grand View women's basketball history, helping lead the team to the Elite 8 of the NAIA National Championships in 2009-10.

Walker resides in Ankeny with his daughter, Lillian.
