Tina Carter - Head Coach - 4th Season
Tina Carter begins her fourth season as head coach of the Viking volleyball program. In just three years at the helm of the Vikings, Carter has made Grand View one of the top teams in the Midwest Collegiate Conference. The team gained national recognition for the first time in program history last season and received votes in the national rankings every week in 2010.
 
The Vikings went a school record 33-9 in 2010 and went 7-1 for second place in the MCC for the second consecutive year.  In 2009, the Vikings were 24-14 overall, runner-up in the MCC, and Coach Carter was selected by her peers as the MCC Coach of the Year. In both 2009 and 2010, Grand View outside hitter Devon Jensen earned NAIA All-American honors and was selected as the MCC Player of the Year. Jensen was also the MCC Newcomer of the Year as a freshman in 2009.

Carter comes to Grand View after serving as the assistant women's coach at Iowa State and Drake. She has coached for the Iowa Power Volleyball Alliance (IPVA) and serves on the Iowa Region Board.

During her two seasons at Iowa State, the Cyclones qualified for the NCAA tournament for the first time in ten years and advanced to the second round.

Carter played her college career at Southern Methodist University on a full athletic scholarship. She captained the SMU volleyball team and was a member of the Academic All-WAC Team.

Carter graduated from the Southern Methodist University in 1998 with a degree in Psychology. She completed her Master of Education Degree in Sports Management from Iowa State University in 2001.

Carter resides in Altoona with her husband Scott and their daughter Lauren.

Donan Cruz - Assistant Coach - 3rd Season

Donan Cruz is in his third season as assistant coach for the Viking women's volleyball team. During this time, the program has risen as one of the top teams in the Midwest Collegiate Conference and received votes in the national rankings every week in 2010. Cruz is also head coach for the Grand View men's volleyball program that makes its debut in 2011-12.

 Cruz comes to Grand View having served as assistant coach for the IPVA 18's club team in 2009. Cruz also spent one year as the head varsity coach of the boy's volleyball team at the University of Hawai'I Laboratory High School.

Cruz played his college career at Graceland University where he was an outside hitter and defensive specialist for the Yellowjackets. He was the team captain his junior and senior seasons. Cruz graduated from Graceland in 2006 with a degree in Marketing Communications.


Makani Cantor - Assistant Coach - 4th Season

Makani Cantor enters his fourth season as assistant coach for the Viking volleyball program. Cantor has been an instrumental part of the Viking women's recent success including the 2011 MCC regular season and tournament titles, the program's first national tournament appearance and top 25 ranking. 

Cantor comes to Grand View having served as an assistant coach at Northwestern State University and Graceland University. He also coaches for Iowa Power Volleyball Alliance as the programs 17's coach. In 2008, his team finished second in the Junior Olympic tournament. Cantor has also spent time with the Waukee Warrior Volleyball Club.

Cantor played collegiately at Graceland University. He is a financial consultant for Wells Fargo and resides in West Des Moines.

Katie Jessen - Assistant Coach - 2nd Season
 

 

Katie Jessen is in her second season with the Viking volleyball program. Jessen comes to Grand View University after having served as a junior varsity coach at Dowling Catholic High School and as a coach with the Sacred Heart middle school volleyball program in 2009.

 

Prior to her coaching duties with Dowling Catholic High School and Sacred Heart, Jessen played four seasons as an outside hitter for the Iowa State University volleyball program.  While at Iowa State, Jessen graduated with double degrees in Business and Marketing and Management.

 

After the conclusion of her playing career, Jessen coached numerous AAU volleyball teams. Jessen has coached the IPVA 15's, IPVA 14's and spent this summer coaching the Central Iowa Select 12's.

 

Jessen currently works at the Des Moines Area Sports Commission promoting the Greater Des Moines area as a sporting destination for all levels of sporting events and  resides in Urbandale.
