Coach Woodley is an inductee to the Iowa High School Football Coaches Association Hall of Fame, and is a Hall of Fame member of the University of Northern Iowa and Waterloo East High School. He has won coach of the year honors at each school he has coached and was the NAIA District 15 Coach of the Year while at St. Ambrose after his team earned a victory over IAA power Western Illinois.
Woodley's name is synonymous with athletics in the state of Iowa as his four sons are all involved in coaching. Brian is the head football coach at Johnston High School, Joe serves as Grand View's Defensive Coordinator, Matthew is an assistant basketball coach at Washington State University in Pullman, Washington, and Andy is an assistant basketball coach at Creighton University in Omaha, Nebraska.
Woodley resides in Urbandale with his wife Betsy.
Barnabo begins his first year at Grand View as the defensive line coach. He is currently physical education teacher at Des Moines at Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines, a position that he has held since 1996. At Dowling, Barnabo served as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach. Barnabo's teams won back-to-back state football championships and went 26-0 in 2000 and 2001. He has spent the past four years coaching at Urbandale High School as the defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
Barnabo graduated from Parker High School in Janesville, Wisconsin, in 1982. He was an All-State linebacker and All-State Shrine Bowl participant. Barnabo played football at Drake University from 1982-87. He then served as a graduate assistant football coach at Montana State University from 1987-89. He was the Defensive Coordinator at Lake Worth High School (Florida) in 1989-90 before moving on to Simpson College where he served as the Linebackers coach for the Storm in 1990-92. In his two seasons at Simpson, the Storm won conference titles and NCAA playoff berths and had a record of 19-3. Barnabo coaches at Oak Ridge High School in Conroe, Texas, from 1992-96.
Barnabo resides in West Des Moines with his wife Susan and two sons, Dalton and Cole.
Berlin played high school football at Urbandale and was a four-year starter and All-American at the University of Northern Iowa. He still holds numerous Gateway Conference and UNI receiving records. While at UNI, Berlin was also a Missouri Valley Conference high jump champion. In 2001, Berlin was drafted in the fifth round by the Tennessee Titans. He played wide receiver and special teams for the Titans for four seasons. Berlin played for the Chicago Bears in 2005 and the New England Patriots in 2006.
Elbert comes to Grand View from Simpson College where, in 2007, he returned, having coached for the Storm from 2003-05. In 2003, the Storm qualified for the national playoffs and finished the season 9-2. In 2006, Elbert coached the defensive backs at Minnesota State University. He coached the offensive and defensive lines at Indianola High School from 1996-97 and in 2002. In 2002 the Indians qualified for the state 4A playoffs. Elbert spent the 1993-95 seasons at Warrensburg High School in Missouri. Warrensburg went 21-10 record from 1993-95 and won its first-ever 4A district title in 1993. In 1992, Elbert coached wide receivers and defensive backs at Ottumwa High School and the bulldogs qualified for its first 4A playoff appearance.
Elbert holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Sports Administration from Simpson College.
He resides in with his wife Kristie their daughter Taylor and sons Brayden and Brock.
Grubb began his coaching career in 1979 at Chaparral Middle School (New Mexico) and later became the head coach at Wathena High School (Kansas). He has spent the past 24 years coaching in Iowa.
Grubb is a 1979 graduate of Buena Vista University where he participated in football and wrestling. He holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Physical Education K-12 and minors in Speech and Drama.
Helgeson spent the last f our seasons as the defensive coordinator and secondary coach at Urbandale High School under Sam Anderson.
Prior to his stint at Urbandale, Helgeson spent six seasons at Dowling Catholic High School where he coached the defensive backs and outside linebackers. In Helgeson's six years at Dowling Catholic, the Maroons amassed a 55-13 record, made three appearances in the Class 4A state championship game, and won back-to-back Class 4A state championships by going undefeated in 2000 and 2001. Helgeson coached under Matt Dillon who is now the head football coach at Cornell College in Mt. Vernon, Iowa.
Helgeson also coached the defensive backs at Lake Mills High School for two seasons. While at Lake Mills, the Bulldogs made one Class 1A playoff appearance. Helgeson coached under Bill Byrnes.
Helgeson played defensive back at the University of Northern Iowa from 1991-1995. He was a three year letter winner for the Panthers under Terry Allen.
A Lake Mills, Iowa, native, Helgeson was a First Team All-State and First Team North Iowa Conference Defensive Back for the Bulldogs. Helgeson was also a State Qualifier in Wrestling, and a First Team North Iowa Conference performer in Baseball for the Bulldogs.
Helgeson resides inUrbandale with his wife Caryn and three sons Caleb, Owen, and Jacob.
Jepson was a two-year starting quarterback for Iowa Central Community College in 1996-97 where he earned All-Region and Academic All-American recognition. He continued his playing career at Cal Poly State where he was a starter, two-year letter winner, and team captain. Jepson two seasons in the Arena Football League with the Sioux Falls Cobras and Iowa Barnstormers.
Jepson graduated in 1991 with a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cal Poly State. He resides in Des Moines with his wife Krista, son Jack, and daughter Willow.
Jones brings 35 years of coaching experience to the Grand View staff. He began his coaching career in 1971 as the defensive backs coach at Twin Cedars High School. Jones has coached at Hillsboro and Van Buren High Schools and Kemper Military School (Missouri). Jones most recently coached the offensive line at Prairie City-Monroe High School from 2003-06 and the Mustangs made three playoff appearances. Jones' has a career football coaching record of 169-149.
Jones attended Grand View Junior College in 1965-66. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education and History from Northeast Missouri State University.
Jones resides in Prairie City with his wife Sharon. They have three children, Sara, Matt, and Molly, and five grandchildren.
Pilcher was head coach for three seasons at Nevada and Louisa-Muscatine High Schools. He spent eight years as an assistant football coach at Nevada, Muscatine, and Mountain Grove High Schools, and one year as an assistant coach at Iowa Central Community College.
As a player, Pilcher was a two-year first team all conference selection and a Des Moines Register All-State Lineman. He was a three-year starter for the University of Iowa where he received all-conference recognition and the Oil Can Award his senior year.
Pilcher holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education from the University of Northern Iowa. He completed his Master of Sport Science degree in Sport Management degree from the United States Sports Academy and is currently working on his School Administration endorsement through Viterbo University.
Sterbick comes to Grand View after three years as a graduate assistant at Washington State from 2005-08. Sterbick assisted with the wide receivers for the '06 and '07 seasons. In 2007, Washington State finished 1st in the Pac-10 and 8th in the nation in passing yards per game with 319.7. Three of the receivers Sterbick assisted with have signed contracts in the NFL. Jason Hill was a 3rd round draft pick by the San Francisco 49'ers in the 2007 Draft, while Michael Bumpus and Charles Dillon signed free agent contracts with the Seattle Seahawks and Indianapolis Colts following the 2008 NFL Draft.
Prior to his time at WSU, Sterbick spent the 2004 season at the University of North Dakota as the tight ends and offensive graduate assistant coach on the Fighting Sioux's national semifinalist team. Sterbick was the wide receivers coach at Missouri Western in 2003-04.
As a player, Sterbick was a four-year letterwinner at Augustana where he was a starting wide receiver and punter. Sterbick was an Honorable Mention North Central All-Conference punter his senior year. The Second Team All-State defensive back from Des Moines Lincoln High School played in the 1998 Iowa High School Shrine Bowl all-star game.
Sterbick graduated from Augustana College in 2003 with Bachelors Degree in Physical Education and a minor in Government/International Affairs. He recently completed his Masters degree in Higher Education/Educational Administration from Washington State University.
Prior to his stint at Johnston, Woodley spent two seasons at St. Ambrose University where he coached the defensive backs and linebackers. In Woodley's two years at St. Ambrose, the Bees were 15-5, were in the top 10 in the nation defensively, and made a playoff appearance. Woodley coached under Todd Sturdy who is now the Offensive Coordinator at Washington State.
Woodley played at Iowa State University from 1999-2004. He was a team captain and played in three bowl games; the Insight Bowl, The Independence Bowl, and the Humanitarian Bowl.
A West Des Moines, Iowa, native, Woodley was both a First Team Elite All-State Linebacker and Central Iowa Metro League (CIML) Player of the Year for the Valley High School Tigers in 1998.
Woodley resides in Grimes with his wife Jen. They are expecting their firdst child in October.
Zuck began his coaching career in 2002 as an assistant at Wapsie Valley High School. He assisted as the offensive and defensive line coach, as well as the kicking and punting coach. Zuck played at Upper Iowa University in the Fall of 2003. He was a two-way starter as the kicker and punter for the Peacocks' Special Teams. In 2004, he returned as an assistant to Wapsie Valley High School until the fall of 2007. The Warriors were 12-1 and state runner-up in 2006, along with a 13-0 record and state championship in 2007.
A Fairbank, Iowa, native and Wapsie Valley alum, Zuck was a two-time First Team All-District player in 1998 and 1999 along with Honorable Mention All-State for the Warriors in 1999. He was also a member of the Warriors' 1997 state championship team.
Zuck obtained his B.A. from the University of Northern Iowa with a major in Exercise Science with an emphasis in Strength and Conditioning and Power Development.
