2017 Men's Cross Country Coaches
Jerry Monner
Head Coach - 14th Season

Coach Monner begins his twelfth year as the head coach of the men’s and women’s cross country program at Grand View University.  The 2015 season will be the start of a new era for Monner and the Viking squads as they transition into the Heart of America Athletic Conference for their first season of competition.  Under Monner’s leadership, the Vikings have traditionally been one of the top programs in the Midwest Collegiate Conference over the past decade and look to be just as competitive in the Heart of America Conference.  Over the past three seasons he has guided six individuals to the NAIA National Championships, had six athletes earn MCC All-Conference honors and six athletes earn MCC Honorable Mention accolades.

During the 2011 season he coached the Viking women to a first place finish at the MCC conference championships qualifying them  for their first ever team berth to the NAIA National Championships ending the season as the 24th ranked team in the nation.  That 2011 season was also highlighted by Obsie Birru being crowned the NAIA National Champion earning All-American honors for her fourth consecutive season.

In his tenure at Grand View, Monner has coached 39 runners to MCC All-Conference honors, 19 NAIA individual national qualifiers, 5 MCC conference champions, 4 NAIA All-Americans, and one National Champion in cross country.  In 2005 he was named the MCC men’s coach of the year and in 2011 he was named the conference women’s coach of the year after guiding both teams to the MCC titles.

Prior to arriving at Grand View, Monner was the head cross country and track & field coach at the University of Minnesota-Morris.  He’s also been on staff as an assistant track & field coach at Loras College and Iowa Wesleyan College.

A native of Andrew, Iowa, Monner holds a bachelor’s degree in sport management and physical education and completed his master’s degree in athletic administration in 2002.  He and his wife Debra reside in the Des Moines metro area.
