Garey Smith will be entering his 17th season at Grand View. Smith has led the Vikings to five trips to the conference championship game and advanced to the NAIA National Tournament in 2003, 2010, 2012 and 2013. The Vikings had the most successful seasons in program history in 2009-10 and 2011-12, advancing to the Elite 8 of the NAIA Championships
A native of Nevada, Iowa, Smith came to the Vikings from William Penn University in Oskaloosa, Iowa. In 18 seasons at William Penn, he coached the Statesmen to six Iowa Conference titles and five NCAA Division III tournament appearances. Smith coached eight NCAA Division III All-Americans, twelve 1,000-point scorers and one 2,000-point scorer. He was honored in 1986, 1988, and 1989 with the Converse Regional Coach of the Year award.
Smith is a 1974 and 1986 graduate of Northwest Missouri State in Maryville, Missouri. His first head coaching job was with Fairfax H.S. in Fairfax, Missouri, where he led the team to the 1980 state championship. In 1989, Smith was inducted into the Missouri High School Coach's Hall of Fame.
Coach Smith resides in Maxwell with his wife Carole.
Coach Greenway enters her third season with the Viking's coaching staff. She came to Grand View in 2014 after a successful stint at North Iowa Area Community College (NIACC) in Mason City. The Trojans finished their 2013-14 season with a 34-3 record as they captured both an ICCAC Region XI regular season title and an ICCAC Region XI tournament title earning them trip to the national tournament. The Trojans went 3-1 in the national tournament with a third place finish.
Prior to becoming head coach at NIACC in 2011, Greenway served three years as an assistant for long-time NIACC coach John Oertel under whom she also played for from 2003-2005. Upon graduation from NIACC in 2005, Greenway was named female NIACC student-athlete of the year.
Originally from Peterson, Iowa, Greenway attended The University of Iowa where she obtained her Bachelor’s Degree in Heath and Sport’s studies in 2008. During her three years at Iowa, Greenway worked as a manager for the women’s basketball team under head coach Lisa Bluder as well as interned with Iowa Hawkeye Strength and Conditioning.
Kelli resides in Urbandale with her husband, Chad.
Kevin Klein enters his second season with the Grand View Women’s Basketball coaching staff. Coach Klein comes to Grand View after 19 years as a successful high school coach. His teams compiled a record of 228-133 in his 16 years as a Head Coach including stints at Albert City-Truesdale, Iowa City High, Des Moines Christian and Iowa Christian Academy.
Originally from Brooklyn, IA, Coach Klein is a 1978 graduate of NE Missouri State University (now Truman State University) in Kirksville, Mo. He owns his own Investment Advisory firm and lives in Urbandale with wife, Barb, and daughter, Kelsey.
Will Marchino joins the Grand View coaching staff as an assistant and Head JV Coach. Coach Marchino has spent the past three seasons as the Head Girls basketball coach at Iowa Christian Academy. He also brings 7 years of AAU experience as the co-program director of the Iowa Dragons.
Originally from West Des Moines, Iowa, Coach Marchino attended the University of Iowa and received his degree in Health and Sports Studies in 2008. Coach Marchino lives in Urbandale with his wife Amanda.
Madison Farren enters her second season as a student assistant with the Grand View Women’s Basketball coaching staff. Farren, a junior, is studying Kinesiology and Health Promotions with a kinesiology concentration in hopes of attending graduate school for physical therapy. Madison is involved in Team GV, a student leadership program on campus and is also a connection group leader for The Salt Company campus ministry.
Farren is originally from Colo, IA and is a graduate of Colo-NESCO Community High School.
