The Viking wrestling program finished ninth in the country at last season's 2010 NAIA National Wrestling Championships under head coach Nick Mitchell.
Third-year head coach Nick Mitchell has added fifteen commitments for the 2010-11 recruiting class, which will only add to an already talented and elite wrestling team.
Three of the incoming class members are Miami, Florida area student-athletes. The first Miami area incoming student-athlete is Omi Acosta (133 lb.) from South Dade High School. Acosta spent two years at Waubonsee Community College after graduating high school where he placed fifth and first in the NJCAA National Tournament.
At the 184 pound weight class, the Vikings have added Waubonsee Community College graduate Tommy Perez. Perez graduated from American High School (Miami, Fla.) and placed seventh in the NJCAA National Tournament last year.
Another American High School (Miami, Fla.) graduate, 197 pound Luis Pimentel, will be a Viking next fall after being a two-time state runner-up in Florida.
Other members of the incoming recruiting class are Cornell College transfer Alex Peitz (Perry HS), Bacone College transfer Spencer Bauer (Melcher-Dallas HS), Ellsworth transfer Bojan Djukic (East HS).
Bauer was a 2010 NAIA National Tournament Qualifier last season, while Djukic was a two-time NJCAA All-American. Djukic placed fourth and eighth at the NJCAA National Tournament the past two seasons while at Ellsworth.
Mitchell will also welcome Iowa High School State Qualifiers to next season's Vikings roster. Gustavo Martinez was a two-time state place winner for Marshalltown High School, finishing runner-up in 2010.
Indianola High School wrestling standout Cody Swim placed third, second, third and third at the state tournament in his four seasons in high school. Also joining the roster next year will be two-time state place winner David Kellogg (Dallas Center-Grimes HS).
Other Iowa High School State Tournament place winners to be a Viking next fall are Kendall Davis (Van Meter HS), Jimmie Schussler (North Polk HS), Andrew Cartwright (Fort Madison HS), Nick Vasey (DM North/Hoover HS), Tyler Pullin (Dallas Center-Grims HS), and Dalton Schutjer (Charles City HS).
