The Vikings (29-20) took on #18 ranked Union University (42-16) following their 7-2 loss in the first game of the 2010 NAIA Baseball Championship Opening Round. Union University lost to Jamestown (ND) in the opening round game on Tuesday to move into the elimination game on Wednesday at 11:00 a.m.
Union University took complete control of the game in the top half of the first inning scoring five times on four hits. The Vikings starting pitcher Austin Denny loaded the bases with one out in the first inning. With the bases loaded, Denny struck out the Bulldogs' Alex Turner looking to gain the second of the inning.
However, Union University's David Maristany drove home two runs with an RBI single to right field. Kevin Kirksey drove home two more runs with a single to left field and Grant Luke singled to right field to score the final Union run of the inning.
The Vikings offense came to the plate trailing 5-0 in the bottom of the first and went down in order in the first. In the top of the third inning, the Bulldogs scored two more times on only one hit to push their lead to 7-0.
Union's two runs came off the bat of Dan Beck, when he blasted a two-run home over the left field wall. Beck was the final batter faced by the Vikings' Denny as Sean Roberts came in to replace Denny with two outs in the third inning. Roberts would get the next Bulldog batter to fly out to end the inning.
Trailing 9-0 in the bottom of the fifth inning, Grand View scored their first run of the game on three hits. Cameron Olinger got the offense started with a one out double to left field. Center fielder Cory Burnes singled to score Olinger, bringing the score to 9-1. Following a fly out to left field, Marc Mericle doubled to put runners on second and third with two outs. However, Union University's Jeremy Stack struck out Matt Dunn swinging to end the Vikings threat.
The sixth inning was all Bulldogs, as they scored eight times on nine hits to push their lead to 17-1. Union University's Kirksey hit a three-run to left field to highlight the sixth inning scoring. The eight runs came with two outs and the Vikings used three different pitchers in the inning.
In the final at bat for Grand View in the bottom of the seventh inning, they were able score two runs on three hits. Grand View's Chris Cutler and Mericle were able to put together back-to-back singles with one out in the inning. Following a fly-out by Dunn, Nick Billinger singled up the middle to score both Cutler and Mericle to end the contest.
