In the final home game of the regular season Grand View hosted Viterbo University in Des Moines. The Vikings clinched at least a share of the regular season conference title with two victories on Saturday over the V-Hawks. Despite the two home victories on the Saturday afternoon, Grand View was unable to close out the conference season with a win; losing to Viterbo 7-4 in a rain shortened eight inning contest.
Viterbo University started off hot in the first three innings on Sunday, scoring runs in the first and third innings. In the first inning the V-Hawks scored two runs on three hits off of the Vikings starting pitcher Kyle Peterson. In the third inning, Grand View committed two errors in the field, allowing Viterbo to score three more runs.
In the fourth inning, senior Jeff Brooks drove home the first Grand View run of the game when he singled to left field. Brooks' single to left field scored Matt Dunn who had singled earlier in the inning. Dunn got things started in the bottom of the sixth inning with a single through the right side. Curtis Quijano walked and Brady Wathen singled to load the bases for Brooks. Brooks followed with a sacrifice fly to center field, driving home his second run of the game. Cameron Olinger singled to right field, scoring the final two Grand View runners of the inning.
Viterbo answered the Vikings scoring with two runs in the top of the seventh to push their lead to 7-4. A rain storm shortened the game after the eighth inning, allowing the V-Hawks to gain the 7-4 road victory.
With an Iowa Wesleyan sweep over the final weekend, they were able to move up to share the top spot with the Vikings, with both teams finishing the conference season with identical 17-7 records.
The Midwest Collegiate Conference post-season tournament will begin on May 6th in Waterloo.
