Grand View notched a 63-53 win over Minot State (N.D.) in first-round action Wednesday at the 19th Annual State Farm-NAIA Division II Women's Basketball National Championship at the Tyson Events Center/Gateway Arena.
Grand View jumped out to an early lead due to strong inside play by Bailey Schechinger and Danielle Ballard and aggressive play by guard Jennifer Jorgensen. The Vikings build a 31-19 midway through the first half. Minot State finished the half with a 13-1 run and the score was tied 32-32 at the break.
Minot State took a five point lead in the second half, but Grand View kept their heads in the game. The Vikings got to the charity stripe hitting 13-of-20 for the game with key free throws down the stretch. The Beavers shot a cold 6-of-17 from the line to help GV's cause and the Vikings' lead returned to double digits securing the win.
The Vikings shot 22-of-53 and hit six treys in the win. Jorgensen logged 20 points, with nine points coming from the charity stripe. She was joined in double figures by Schechinger and Jamie Sickles with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Beth Ehlers added a much-needed spark of the bench with eight points. Micah Reed handed out seven assists.
Minot State was dominated down low on both ends of the court. The Beavers were out-rebounded 45-36 and gave up 24 points in the paint to the Vikings.
MacKenzie Mack led the scoring efforts for Minot State with 17 points. Minot State's campaign comes to an end in the first round for the second straight year. The Beavers finish with a record of 21-9.
With the win, Grand View improves to 26-8 on the season. The Vikings will face Hastings (Neb.) in second-round action on Friday at 12 p.m.
