The Viking softball team kicked off its official season with a four-game stint in Claremore, Oklahoma, over the weekend. GV came home winless, but faced tough competition and gained valuable experience playing Rogers State and Evangel University .
On Saturday, Rogers State took an early 2-0 lead in the first inning. Grand View came back in the third with three runs. Senior Meghan Tomlinson led off the inning, with junior Sarah Thomas backing it up with a base hit. Tomlinson scored from a wild pitch. Emily Gilbert made it to first base on a wild pitch. Courtney Yacinich came up with a base hit and scored Thomas and Gilbert to take the lead 3-2. Rogers State ended up scoring in the third and fifth innings to 3-1. Tomlinson was 2-for-4 in the game.
In its second game Saturday, Grand View scored a run in the first inning to take an early lead, but Evangel was too much second half of the game and defeated GV 9-1 in six innings. Senior Meghan Tomlinson was 2-for-4 from the plate and senior Amanda Busch was 2-for-3.
Game one on Sunday, Grand View scored early in the first and third inning scoring four run with a three-run home run by Emily Gilbert. Rogers State answered back with three runs in the third inning. Grand View led off the fifth inning with another four runs. The first run was scored from Gilbert's hit and Courtney Yacinich followed it up with a three-run home run. Rogers State scored eight runs in the bottom of the sixth and Grand View scored again in the seventh inning, but lost 11-9. Grand View had 12 hits in the game.
Rogers State took an early 6-0 lead in the first inning final game of the weekend on Sunday. Grand View was unable to answer back and lost 7-3. Senior Whitney Link, sophomore Emily Gilbert, and junior Megan Anderson each had a home run. Freshman pitcher Lauren Vitiello was 2-for-4 at the plate and Anderson went 3-for-3.
The Vikings (0-4) head to Olathe, Kansas, this weekend to compete in the MidAmerica Nazarene Tournament with game sat 4pm and 8pm Friday and 10am ad 12pm on Sunday.
