Mount Mercy shot 60% from the field in the second half and made two key layups in the last twenty second to upset the No. 14 Vikings (22-7, 11-5 MCC) tonight in Cedar Rapids.
Mount Mercy led by as much 17 points with 8:45 to play in the first half, but a jumper by Greg Shultz (Carroll, Iowa) sparked a 14-0 run that cut the Mustang lead to three, 29-26. The lead would go back and forth the rest of the half until Corey Viet (Ackley, Iowa) made a layup with seconds remaining in the half that gave the Vikings a 33-32 lead at half.
The second half was tightly contested with the lead changing throughout the half. The Mustangs went on a 7-0 run with 13:28 left in the half, but the Vikings responded with a 10-2 run of their own, capped by a Matt Banzhaf (Ackley, Iowa) jumper that gave the Vikings a 52-51 lead with nine minutes remaining in the game.
The teams traded buckets the rest of the way, but the Mustangs would control the paint down the stretch while the Vikings could not get their jumpers to fall. Mount Mercy had 38 points in the paint that propelled them to the 77-72 upset win.
Grand View shot 42.6% (26-61) from the floor and 26.3% (5-19) from three-point range. Free throws kept them in the game connecting 15-of-18 for 83.3%.
Grand View was led by Viet's 26 points. He was 10-of-11 from the free throw line. Shultz led the team with three three-pointers en route to 15 points and Kevin Smith (Ankeny, Iowa) contributed 11 points. Bryant Kucera (Cedar Rapids, Iowa) gave GV quality minutes off of the bench with and finished with 10 points. Grant Burns (Monroe, Iowa) had a team-high seven assists.
The Vikings are off until they host first round of the MCC Tournament next Wednesday, Feb. 24th. Grand View's opponent and game time is TBD.
