The Viking men qualified for the NAIA Indoor National Championships in four events at the Cornell Hilltop Invitational in Mount Vernon on Saturday.
Senior Jordan Adams (Lamont, Iowa) hit the NAIA "A" standard qualifying mark in the Weight Throw with a first place toss of 16.99m. Sophomore Tyler Wells (Des Moines, Iowa) had a great outing and qualified for nationals in two events. Wells was third in the Shot Put with "B" standard and school record throw of 15.18m. He was also third in the Weight Throw with a "B" standard toss of 15.59m. Freshman Cory Kunze (Mongo, Iowa) qualified for nationals in the 55m Hurdles with a fourth place "B" standard time of 7.97 seconds.
Grand View had many other top individual performances in several events. Senior Steven Hughes (Grimes, Iowa) placed third in the Long Jump (6.36m), sophomore Lawrence Furlow (Humble, Texas) was fourth in the 200m Dash (23.13), sophomore Pete Westerkamp (Clarinda, Iowa) and freshman Tariq White (Des Moines, Iowa) took fourth and fifth places respectively in the 400m Dash (52.22 and 52.31).
Three relays placed in the top five - the 4x400m (3:32.27) and 4x800m (8:49.46) teams took fourth place while the Distance Medley Relay team placed fifth (11:58.23).
Next up for the Vikings track & field teams is the MCC Championships held February 13th in Sterling, Illinois.
