The Vikings rebounded from their loss at Waldorf on Wednesday with a 72-58 win against MCC foe Ashford this afternoon in Clinton. The Vikings post players controlled the inside and held a double-digit lead for most of the game.
The game was tightly contested for much of the first half until Kevin Smith (Ankeny, Iowa) made a jumper that sparked a 17-5 run that gave the Vikings a 31-20 lead with 2:33 left in the first half. A basket by Ashford and two Corey Viet (Ackley, Iowa) free throws gave the Vikings a 33-22 advantage at half time.
Grand View was consistent in the second half and held a comfortable double-digit lead for the entire half. Viet scored a basket, with 13:13 left in the second half to give the Vikings their largest advantage of the game of 19 points, 52-38. The Saints would trim the lead to 64-53 with a basket with 5:03 left in the game, but Grand View made enough free throws down the stretch to seal a 72-58 win.
Viet led the Vikings with 27 points, including 14-14 from the free throw line and seven assists. Greg Shultz (Carroll, Iowa) added 17 points with a team high five three-pointers. Kevin Smith had 12 points and a team high seven rebounds. Grant Burns (Monroe, Iowa) continued his strong play at the point guard position distributing eight assists and adding four rebounds.
The Vikings (20-6, 9-4) look to finish strong in MCC play when they host Iowa Wesleyan, Feb.10 at 7:30 p.m.
