Over 200 wrestlers participated in the Grand View Open held today in Des Moines. The Vikings came away with a champion, two co-champions, and three other top-six finishers.
Nick Coffman (Huxley, Iowa) was Grand View's first champion of the day at 141 lbs. Coffman pinned Trent Cox of University of Nebraska-Omaha in 2:43 in his opening match. He then won with a 6-0 decision over Missouri Baptist's Joe Thornton and an 11-3 decision over Wartburg's Cameron Wagner to get to the title match. Coffman pinned Marcus Cobb (unattached) for the championship.
Brad Lower (Burlington, Iowa) and Ty Knowler (Altoona, Iowa) both advanced to the championship round of the 165 lb. bracket. The teammates decided to share the championship at 165 lbs.
Lower won by fall over University of Wisconsin's Eric Vaneveoven followed by an 8-1 decision over Missouri Valley's DW Bradshaw. Lower pinned Dave Foxen of the University of Iowa in his final match of the day.
Knowler pinned all three of his opponents today. He took down Jacob Bohler of St. Olaf in just :43, Tyler Lankford of Missouri Valley in 1:30 and Josh Heckendorn of University of Nebraska Omaha in 6:38.
Grand View placed three more in the top six - Glenn Rhees (Atascadero, Calif.) finished sixth at 174 lbs, Jordaryl Logan (Detroit, Mich.) placed second at 184 lbs., and Justin Rau (Council Bluffs, Iowa) placed sixth at 197 lbs.
The Vikings next compete at the Missouri Valley Open on February 6th .
