The Viking men's track & field team opened its season at the UNI Panther Open over the weekend. Grand View qualified one for the national championships and set two school records at the meet.
Senior Jordan Adams (Lamont, Iowa) won the Weight Throw with an "A" standard national qualifying throw of 16.76m (55'). He will compete at the NAIA National Indoor Track & Field Championships March 4-6 in Johnson City, Tennessee.
Sophomore Tyler Wells (Des Moines, Iowa) was fourth in the Shot Put with a school record toss of 14.62m (47'11 ¾"). The previous record was set in 2009 by Adams (47'5"). Wells also placed eighth in the Weight Throw with a toss of 14.06 (46'1 ½").
Senior Matt Smalley (Altoona, Iowa) was sixth in the 60m Hurdles with a school record time of 8.84 breaking the previous record of 9.07 set in 2009 by Pete Westerkamp.
Freshman Tariq White (Des Moines, Iowa) was third in 800m Run with a time of 2:09.12.
The track & field team next competes at the Iowa State Open in Ames January 22-23.
