The Mid-States Football Association has released its All-Conference honors. Eleven Grand View football players earned post-season accolades and two members of the coaching staff were honored.
Five Vikings received First Team recognition: running back Daryl Ford (So., Houston, Texas), wide receiver Brett Opdahl (So., Urbandale, Iowa), defensive lineman Tyler Andersen (Madrid, Iowa), linebacker E.J. Peterson (Jr., Monroe, Iowa), defensive back Titus Bland (Sr., Baytown, Texas). Bland was also honored on the First Team as a return specialist. Ford and Bland received the most votes of any player nominated in their positions.
Named to the Second Team was: tight end Nick Eaton (Jr., Des Moines, Iowa), linemen Adam Dutcher (Jr., Altoona, Iowa) and Tyler Wells (So., Des Moines, Iowa), linebackers Mayron Martinez (So., Pasadena Texas) and Josh Monette (So., Houston, Texas) and defensive back Brandon Howard (Sr., Tampa, Florida).
"As the all-conference honors are voted on by the coaches, it is an honor for our kids to be that well thought of. The kids put in a lot of hard work, and they were rewarded for it.," said Grand View Head Coach Mike Woodley.
Mike Woodley was unanimously selected by his peers as the Midwest League Coach of the Year. In just the program's second year, Woodley led the Vikings to an 8-3 overall record and a 6-1 conference record. Grand View was ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches' Poll for five consecutive weeks with its highest rating as the No. 17 in the NAIA.
"Mike Woodley is a very deserving recipient of the MSFA Midwest League Coach of the Year award. His accomplishments in just the second season of football at Grand View University are remarkable. Coach Woodley's determination to build a successful program with great athletes of high character has been extraordinary. The effort and dedication of these student athletes have led to an incredible 2009 season," said Grand View Athletic Director Troy Plummer.
Joe Woodley, who serves as the Vikings' defensive coordinator and linebacker coach under his father, received the assistant coach of the year award.
"As a dad speaking, it is a big honor for Joe. He, as did all the members of our coaching staff, worked tirelessly all season," added Mike Woodley.
