The #7 ranked Vikings basketball team successfully avenged last season's loss to the Buena Vista Beavers Tuesday night with a 74-65 win. The third straight win for the Vikings came over a Beavers team that beat Division II Wayne State Sunday night. Grand View was led by a strong performance from senior Corey Viet, who finished with 24 points and 6 rebounds.
The night got off to a slow start for the Vikings, as they were held scoreless until just under the 16 minute mark. Despite the cold shooting start, the Vikings defense held the Beavers to just 4 points in the first four minutes. Although Grand View was able to find their shot in the first half, Buena Vista took a seven point lead midway through the half. With over five minutes left in the half, Buena Vista held a seven point lead. The Vikings force Buena Vista into a turnover and a Nick Wagner lay-up on the other end began a run that close out the half. Grand View used a 17-7 run to end the half to take a 37-34 halftime lead.
The second half saw the Vikings continue to build on the first half momentum. Grand View was able to get the ball inside to their All-American Corey Viet on numerous possessions. Viet scored on back-to-back possessions and forced a turnover on the other end, giving the Vikings their biggest lead of the game at eleven. Although Buena Vista was able to get within five with under two minutes remaining, Grand View was able to make free throws to close out the contest.
Viet received scoring help from fellow seniors Grant Burns and Greg Schulz. Burns finished the night with 14 points and eight assists, making two three pointers in crucial moments of Tuesday night's game. Schulz finished with 13 points, connecting on three three-pointers. Senior Matt Banzhaf once again led the Vikings with 10 rebounds.
Grand View (7-2) will travel to Graceland University Thursday night for non-conference play.
