The Vikings men's basketball team travelled to the Draemel Classic in Fremont, Nebraska on the campus of Midland Lutheran College. The Vikings (5-2) jumped out to an early 19-11 lead over #12 Bellevue University and were led the rest of the afternoon by senior Corey Viet of Ackley. Viet led Grand View with 28 points and 8 rebounds in the 69-56 victory.
Grand View built the early first half lead through some stingy defense and execution on the offensive end. However, the Bruins battled back to take a one-point lead with under three minutes left in the first half. The Vikings found Viet for a short jump shot to regain the lead and never looked back from that point. Viet and his teammates took a 33-29 lead into halftime.
The Vikings defense held the Bruins scoreless for the first three minutes of the second half. While the defense was keeping the Bruins from scoring, Grand View's senior Greg Schulz was able to find the range from deep and helped the Vikings take an eleven-point lead. Despite a mini-run by the Bruins midway through the second half, Bellevue never got closer than five points in the second half. The Vikings were able to close out the game with free throws, finishing the afternoon 11 of 12 from the charity stripe. The 56 points was the fewest points scored by the high powered Bellevue Bruins offense this season, while the Vikings held the Bruins to 35 percent shooting for the game.
Viet was helped in scoring Friday afternoon by Greg Schulz of Carroll who finished 5 of 8 from three-point range. Schulz's 20 points is a season-high for him. Sophomore Kevin Smith finished in double figures with 10 points, while Matt Banzhaf finished with 6 rebounds. Senior Grant Burns found open teammates most of the game, finishing with a game high seven assists.
The Vikings will be in action again tomorrow night at 6:00 pm when they play host school Midland Lutheran College.
