The Vikings basketball team advanced to compete in the Maple City Hoopfest Saturday afternoon on the campus of Goshen College. However, the seventh-ranked Vikings were defeated by the host 79-59.

The first half saw the Vikings and Maple Leafs battle to a 29-29 tie. The second half was completely different though, as the Vikings could not find the hoop from 3-point range. Grand View shot 10 percent from behind the arc, connecting on only 1 of 17 attempts. The Maple Leafs took control of the game last in the second half, shooting an impressive 54.5 percent from three.

Grand View was led in scoring by sophomore Kevin Smith who finished with 19 points and 8 rebounds. Senior Corey Viet ended with 15 points, including a perfect 7 of 7 from the free throw line.

The Vikings finished with two players receiving Maple City Hoopfest All-Tournament honors. Smith and senior Grant Burns were selected to the All-Tournament Team, along with Matt Kingshott (Cornerstone), Austin Hefley (Goshen), Nate West Jr. (Goshen) and MVP Errick McCollum Jr. (Goshen).

Grand View will be on the road again Wednesday night when they continue their tough non-conference schedule against Dordt College (2-0).
