The No. 3 seeded Viking men's soccer team had no problems with No. 6 Iowa Wesleyan in the the first round of the Midwest Collegiate Conference Tournament Sunday at Cownie Complex in Des Moines. Grand View scored two goals in each half in the 4-0 shutout of the Tigers.
Freshman forward Ryan Adamson (Dumfries, Scotland) scored the game winner early assisted by freshman midfielder Jonny MacAdam (Glasgow, Scotland) in the 8th minute of the game to get the Vikes started. Senior forward Armin Mujdzic (Des Moines, Iowa) scored the second goal of the half in the 22nd minute and GV led 2-0 at the break.
Mujdzic scored his second goal of the day assisted by Adamson in the 63rd minute. The Vikings final goal was scored by junior defender Craig Hughes (Kilsyth, Scotland) wih assists to buth Mujdzic and senior defender Trevor Cushman (Burlington, Iowa).
Twenty players contributed to the Vikings win on Sunday. Junior starting goalkeeper Darren Martin (Dumfries, Scotland) and senior goalkeeper shared the shutout. Waithanji played the final 11 minutes in the goal for Grand View and made two fantastic saves near the end of the contest.
The Vikings outshot the Tigers 25-6 and 15-3 in shots on goal.
Grand View improves to 12-5-2. The Vikings will travel to La Crosse, Wis., next Sunday to face No. 2 Viterbo in the MCC Tourney semifinals. Game time is 2 p.m.
