The Grand View Men's soccer team traveled to Oskaloosa, Iowa to take on conference rival William Penn University in its first MCC action of the season. The match was hard fought by both teams with Vikings coming away with a 2 - 0 win.
The first half of the match was played fairly evenly with each team creating only a few good scoring opportunities. Late in the first half, Ryan Adamson (Dumfries, Scotland) was able to find the William Penn net after running on to a pass from Armin Mujdzic (Des Moines, Iowa). The half ended with Grand View leading 1 - 0.
In the second half, there were more scoring chances created by both teams. Grand View held the edge with shots on goals. Adamson was able to start the second half and had a couple of scoring opportunities that went just wide of the far post. As the game went on Grand View was able to control play and kept the ball in the William Penn half for the majority of time.
Grand View defenders Troy Moon (Stuart, Iowa) Trevor Cushman (Burlington, Iowa), Paul Dudson (Brighton, England) and Craig Hughes (Kilsyth, Scotland) were able to cancel out most of the William Penn offensive attacks. Late in the game, Grand View was on full attack and had numerous chances just missing the target. In the 82nd minute Mujdzic was able to break through the defense and calmly put the ball past the William Penn goalkeeper and into the net.
"After a mediocre performance against Wartburg I was pleased with the enthusiasm and play of the team tonight. Wm. Penn is always tough on the road and the victory was just what we needed, not only to start the conference schedule on the right foot, but to get a re-focus on the season," said Coach Reid.
Grand View (5 -3, 1-0 MCC) next hosts #4 Baker University at Cownie Complex on September 25th. Game time is 7 p.m.
