Des Moines, Iowa- Grand View men's basketball and head coach Denis Schaefer are pleased to announce the hire of new head assistant coach Austin Schlatter.

Schlatter recently completed his first year as a Part-Time Assistant Coach for the men's basketball program at Grand View after serving as the team's Graduate Assistant for the two previous years.  "As a graduate student and staff member at Grand View, I have enjoyed my opportunities to grow my professional skills," quoted Schlatter. "I find pride in the atmosphere and reputation that Grand View University exudes, and I am excited for the opportunity to help provide a greater contribution to the university's further development."

In his second year with the Vikings, he helped the Vikings transition from the Midwest Collegiate Conference to the Heart of America Conference and NAIA Division 1. After finishing in 10th place in 2015-16 season, their first year of Heart competition, the Vikings showed great strides in their second year jumping 8 spots in the standings and finishing in 2nd place in the 2016-17 season. The 2016-17 team also made their first appearance in the NAIA Division 1 National Tournament in school history.

Schaefer is eager for Schlatter to join his coaching staff, "I am excited to advance Austin into the full-time position. He has been a highly involved part of the men's basketball program the past three seasons and is very deserving of his new role."

Schlatter came to Grand View in2014 after two seasons as the head boys' basketball coach at BCLUW High School in Conrad, Iowa. He led BCLUW to its highest win total in over a decade in subsequent seasons. Schlatter was named the NICL-West Conference Coach of the Year at the completion of the 2013-14 season.

Schlatter graduated from Iowa State University with an undergraduate degree in History. Schlatter has his master's degree in Sports Management from Grand View University.
