The 22nd ranked Grand View Vikings men's basketball team was defeated by the Missouri Valley College Vikings 93-88 in the quarterfinals of the Heart of America Conference tournament Thursday night at Sisam Arena in Des Moines.

It was all Missouri Valley in the first half as they shot 55% from the field including 5-9 from distance and forced 12 Grand View turnovers to take a 52-44 lead at the intermission. Grand View shot the ball well to keep it close as they were 16-27 from the field and 11-12 from the free throw line but the turnovers and six offensive rebounds from Missouri Valley cost them.

Grand View would battle all the way back in the second half and tie the game at 76 with 6:47 to go in the game on a three by senior Kerry Green (Missouri City, Texas). However, Missouri Valley would answer with a pair of free throws and then push it to four after a Grand View turnover where the lead would stay until the 5:14 mark. Grand View would cut it to two points on a couple of free throws from senior Alex Welsch (Fontanelle, Iowa) and then tie the game at 80 on a pair of free throws from junior Jjuan Hadnot (Beaumont, Texas) with just 4:03 remaining. Grand View had a defensive stop on the ensuing possession but gave up a crucial offensive rebound and an eventual bucket plus a foul for Missouri Valley giving them a three point lead.

Missouri Valley would lead the rest of the way as a game tying three by Green with 12 seconds left rimmed out and Grand View was forced to foul. Missouri Valley would convert and push the lead to five to hold on for the 93-88 upset.

Grand View had five players in double figures led by Welsch who finished with a season high 22 points. Senior Chase Mullen (Friendswood, Texas) added 20 points, Hadnot had 19 points, while Green and senior Tyler Springer (Des Moines, Iowa) had 11 points and 10 points respectively. Grand View struggled from three all night against the Missouri Valley zone shooting 5-23 from deep but did go 25-30 from the free throw line.

Grand View is now 20-10 overall. The Vikings will wait now until next Wednesday, March 8th when the NAIA Division 1 National Tournament bracket is released to see when and who they will face in the opening round. The opening round of the tournament is Wednesday, March 15 and Thursday, March 16.
