Women's Basketball - Sun, Feb. 26, 2017

The Grand View women's basketball team travelled to Baldwin City, KS Saturday (Feb 25) to play their last regular season Heart game of the year. The Vikings knew they would face a challenge in No. 8 Baker who clinched first place in the Heart and a national tournament bid with their win over Graceland on Wednesday (Feb 22).  The Vikings played the Wildcats close in the second and fourth quarters but had a hard time containing Baker in the first and third quarters as they dropped the contest 77-59.

The Vikings, who got most of their points in the paint, were led in scoring by senior Maddie Westergard (Fort Calhoun, Neb.) who had 15 points in limited minutes. Senior Kellie Schmit (Britt, Iowa) stepped up inside for Grand View as she chipped in 12 points including 6-7 at the free throw line. Freshman center Gabby Reyerson (Marshalltown, Iowa) also came off the bench for eight points and team-high five rebounds.

Grand View, who struggled to score during stretches, shot 39% overall and hit 77% of their free throws (17-22) compared to Bakers 45% and 93% from the charity stripe (14-15). The Vikings were out-rebounded 39-29 in the loss.

The Heart of America Conference Tournament starts Monday (Feb 27) and Grand View (14-16, 11-15) has earned the eight seed landing them on their home court against nine seed Mount Mercy (13-17, 10-16). Game time is set for 7 p.m. The two teams most recently played each other last Wednesday (Feb 22) with Grand View winning the contest 72-64. The winner of Monday night's game will travel to first seed Baker on Wednesday (March 1). See the full tournament bracket here.
