Des Moines, Iowa- Nine teams brought individuals to compete for a berth into the 2017 NAIA Wrestling National Championships, presented by USA Wrestling-Kansas. Five-time defending national champion and top-ranked Grand View won the 2017 NAIA Wrestling Central National Qualifier Champions with 215 points, (RV) Baker University took second with 138 points and No.11 Dickinson State University took third with 116 points. No. 16 Missouri Valley College placed fourth with University of Jamestown, William Penn University, Benedictine College, Graceland University, and Waldorf University finishing respectively.

Twenty-nine top 16 individual-ranked grapplers competed in the qualifying event, including five number one ranks. In the most recent national rankings on Feb. 8, 10 of the Vikings fell in the top four of their respective weight classes, including top ranked Jacob Colon (133 pounds), Grant Henderson (165 pounds), Lawton Benna (174 pounds) and Dean Broghammer (285 pounds). With the addition of Victor Hughes of Baker (Kan.) at 149 pounds, the Central Qualifier showcased five top-ranked individuals.

Nick Mitchell of Grand View University was honored with coach of the year. Outstanding wrestler of the year was shared by Walker Marshall and Josh Wenger both of Grand View University.

The Vikings had 11 top ranked wrestlers in the event -- No. 1 Jacob Colon (133), No. 2 Josh Wenger (141), No. 4 Walker Marshall (149), No. 1 Grant Henderson (165),  No. 1 Lawton Benna (174), No. 3 Dylan Blackford (174), No. 3 Michael Pixley (184), No. 2 Johnathen Dennis (197), No. 9 Evan Hansen (197), No. 1 Dean Broghammer (285), No. 2 Jacob Laden (285). The Vikings went undefeated until the finals where four weight classes featured a match-up of Viking teammates, 165 pounds, 174 pounds, 197 pounds, 285 pounds.

157 pounds-

No. 13 Tobias Barnes of Missouri Valley College defeated No. 6 Sean Elkins of Dickinson State University 7-5 in double overtime in the championship.

165 pounds-

Teammates No. 1 Grant Henderson and Ryan Niven of Grand View University met in the championship. Niven forfeited to Henderson. Niven No. 3 Andrew Simmons of Missouri Valley College by tech fall (20-2) at 165 pounds. Simmons placed 3rd with No. 5 Dalton Tipton of Missouri Valley College placed 4th and No. 7 Anthony Orozco of Benedictine College placed 5th.

174 pounds-

Teammates No. 1 Lawton Benna and No. 3 Dylan Blackford of Grand View University faced each other in the championships. Benna defeated Blackford 4-0.

184 pounds-

No. 3 Michael Pixley of Grand View University defeated No. 7 Jon Solano of Dickinson State University 10-0 in the championship.

197 pounds-

Teammates No. 2 Johnathen Dennis and No. 9 Evan Hansen of Grand View University faced each other in the championship. Hansen defeated Dennis 10-3.

285 pounds-
