The Grand View women's basketball team had a hard time finding the bottom of the bucket Saturday as they hosted Evangel. Both teams struggled offensively in the first half, as the Vikings had a seven point lead at the break and held the Crusaders to just 15 points. The third quarter, however, is where Evangel stormed ahead posting 21 points compared to Grand View's nine. The Vikings were never able to gain momentum and dropped the game 52-42.
The Vikings were led in scoring by freshman Abby Penquite (Altoona, Iowa) and sophomore Jaci Stumpf (Fort Dodge, Iowa) with eight points each while freshman Rachel Danielson (Mason City, Iowa) finished with seven. Senior Maddie Westergard (Fort Calhoun, Neb.) had a team high 11 rebounds while fellow seniors Mariah Hardeman (Arlington, Texas) and Kellie Schmit (Britt, Iowa) grabbed nine and eight rebounds, respectively.
Grand View was out-rebounded 48-44 and were held to 24% overall shooting from the floor connecting on only 15 made baskets compared to Evangel's 25% and 17 made. The Vikings took care of the basketball having only 10 turnovers in the loss and shot 75% (9-12) from the free throw line.
The Vikings (13-13, 10-12) will host No. 12 Benedictine (20-6, 19-3) on Thursday, February 16. Game time is set for 5:30 p.m.
