The Grand View women's basketball team dropped a much needed Heart game to Avila Wednesday night (Feb 8) on their home floor. The Vikings were neck and neck most of the first half and held a one point lead at the break (37-36) as they shot 56% overall from the floor in the first 20 minutes of play. Avila also shot well in the first half at 52% and were able to frazzle the Vikings into 12 turnovers.
Despite half time adjustments, Grand View was outscored 23-13 by the Eagles in the third quarter before going on a run of their own and taking a four point lead with 1:30 to go. However, two costly turnovers in the final minute would lead to two Avila scores and the Vikings dropped the contest 75-71.
Grand View was led in scoring by senior Maddie Westergard (Fort Calhoun, Neb.) with 20 points followed by fellow senior Kellie Schmit (Britt, Iowa) with 14. Sophomore Madison Sickles (Crestwood, Iowa) chipped in 11 points. Schmit led all rebounders with 10 and junior Annie Penquite (Altoona, Iowa) grabbed nine while sophomore point guard Jaci Stumpf (Fort Dodge, Iowa) had a season-high 10 assists in the loss. Grand View continued to share the ball very well as they had 22 assists on 28 made baskets and they also out-rebounded the Eagles 37-28.
The Vikings (13-12, 10-11) will continue Heart play on their home floor on Saturday (Feb 11) as they host Evangel (10-14, 9-12). Game time is set for 2 p.m. Grand View will honor their seniors at half time of the men's game.
