The #15 Grand View Vikings continued their winning ways at home beating the Avila University Eagles 74-63 at Sisam Arena in Des Moines.
The 15th ranked Vikings were very efficient in the first half shooting 15-27 from the field and 7-13 from downtown. Defensively, Grand View held Avila to 31% shooting in the opening 20 minutes including 3-9 from three point territory. This, along with a plus seven advantage on rebounds allowed Grand View to take a 38-25 lead in to halftime. Senior Chase Mullen (Friendswood, Texas) led Grand View with 12 points in the first half.
In the second half the Viking offense would cool off considerably, especially from three point territory allowing Avila to hang around. Grand View would go 9-26 from the floor in the final minutes and 0-7 from distance. Nine offensive rebounds, including five from freshman Jay Schon (Ankeny, Iowa) gave Grand View the extra possessions it needed to hang on for the win. 20 Grand View turnovers and going 19-27 from the free throw line didn't allow the Vikings so separate from the scrappy Eagles but the Vikings would prevail 74-63.
Grand View is now 18-6 overall on the year and 16-5 in Heart of America Conference play.
Grand View will host the Evangel Crusaders Saturday in another Heart matchup and Grand View's seniors will be recognized prior to the game. The Crusaders defeated the Vikings 88-81 back in early December. The women are set to tip off at 2 PM with the men to follow at 4 PM.
