Delray Beach, Florida- The Grand View men's soccer team (16-6-2) defeated #5 seed University of Northwestern Ohio (19-2-3) in the NAIA National Championship quarterfinal 1-0. The Vikings will advance to the semifinals this Friday, December 2, against #1 seed Hasting College (Neb.) at 3pmCT/4pmEST. This is the furthest Grand View has advanced in the National Tournament in school history.

The Vikings gave up two free kick in front of their own goal in the first half, giving UNOH the opportunity to put themselves on the scoreboard but they could not get past freshmen goalkeeper Darnell Larsen (FR/Kastrup, Denmark). The first half was a hard fought battle on both ends, recording 5 shots for GV and 7 for ONOH. The game reached halftime at 0-0.

The second half looked a lot like the first, both teams creating chances to put themselves in the books. The only game goal came in the 76th minute of play after senior captain Sam Blackman (SR/Dartford, England) beat two UNOH defenders, got to the end line and delivered a dangerous ball in front of the net which resulted in a goal. The Vikings defense was able to protect the lead until the end, recording the 1-0 victory.

On paper, the Racers outshot the Vikings 12-9, 4-3 on goal. Each team recorded 15 fouls, three corner kicks.

Blackman was proud of the team performance, "It is a great achievement for the boys, coaches and the school. It was a very tough game today and we are pleased we managed to come out on top. The work doesn't stop, onto the semifinal on Friday and we go again. '

The Vikings will face #1 seed Hastings College (Neb.) Friday in the semifinal at 3pmCT/4pmEST.
