The Grand View Vikings women's golf team had an impressive showing this past weekend at the Mt. Mercy Classic in Cedar Rapids, Iowa at Hunters Ridge Golf Course as they placed 2nd out of seven teams.

Sophomore Kimberly Nelson (Malaysia) led the Vikings as she took 2nd place overall shooting a nine over par 81 which was just two strokes behind the winner of the tournament.

"I am really pleased with the women's performance and especially Kim Nelson's," said head coach Chris Winkel. "She is such a talented player and I knew once she put the pieces together she would have some great tournaments," he added.

Junior Emily Wagner (Casey, Iowa) was also strong as she placed seventh in the field after shooting a 15 over par 87.

"Emily Wagner really stepped up and continues to improve," commented Winkel.

Maria Mantilla (Bogota, Colombia) finished tied for 10th place overall as she was just two strokes behind Emily shooting an 89 for her round. Olivia Erpelding (Wesley, Iowa) finished in 22nd place after shooting a 95 and Alexis Owen (Adel, Iowa) finished tied for 26th place shooting a 101.

"We have a very deep squad this year but really need our top three to perform well for us to be successful going forward," added Coach Winkel.

The ladies are back on the course Wednesday as they play in a tournament hosted by Simpson at Indianola Country Club in Indianola. Check back with gvvikings.com for a complete recap and follow the Vikings on social media for the most up to date information.
