The No. 2 Viking football team kept the train rolling today advancing to the semifinal round of the NAIA Championships with a solid 44-24 win over No. 11 Tabor (Kan.) this afternoon in Des Moines.
Despite a rocky first quarter in which GV turned over the ball on its first three possessions, the Vikings fought back from a 14-0 deficit and scored 30 unanswered points to take control of the game.
Derek Fulton (Bettendorf, Iowa) connected with Brady Roland (Carlisle, Iowa) with five seconds remaining in the first quarter for GV's first score of the game.
GV benefitted from a safety and then scored two rushing touchdowns by Charles Badgett (St. Louis, Mo.) and Mike Perez (Dike, Iowa) and another TD in the air from Fulton to Taylor Goebel (Coppell, Texas) to lead 30-14 at the break.
A field goal just into the third quarter ended the scoring slump for Tabor, but GV answered on its next possession on Fulton's third TD pass of the day to Davion Hurst (Houston, Texas) to put the Vikings up 37-17 at the end of the third.
Roland scored his second TD of the day and the Vikings final score on another pass by Fulton as time wound down in the fourth.
Fulton completed 17-of-30 passes for four TD's and 297 yards on the day. Roland caught five passes for 141 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Vikings.
Defensively, Zach Hollier (Beaumont, Texas) recorded a team-high eight tackles. Jason Gladfelder (Ozark, Mo.), Kelvin Gilkey (Lewisville, Texas) , and Dudley Bickham (Pensacola, Fla.) contributed seven tackles apiece. Gilkey collected an interception for a 30-yard return.
Following the game, Roland (Offensive) and Gladfelder (Defensive) were voted by the media as the NAIA Players of the Game.
Grand View moved to 12-0 on the year; Tabor finished its season 10-3.
