The Grand View women's basketball season came to an end today as the No. 2 Vikings lost 62-55 to No. 3 Mount Mercy in the semifinal round of the MCC Tournament.
Both teams had trouble settling into the game in the first half. Mount Mercy committed 15 turnovers and Grand View had 13 of their own in the half. The game was evenly matched for most of the first half and he score was tied six times. The Mustangs closed out the last two minutes of the first half with a 10-0 run and led 35-25 at the break.
Mount Mercy made a couple buckets to open the second half and hold its largest lead of the game 39-25. Grand View then went on a 13-0 run to close the gap to 39-38 with 10:56 remaining The Mustangs held the lead until Grand View tied the score 45-45 with 5:54 left in the game. Mount Mercy rebuilt its lead to five points. The Vikings were able to get within two points, but the Mustangs hit two key three-pointers in the final 1:25 and forced the Vikings to foul. Mount Mercy went 4-4 from the free throw line in the final minute to seal the win.
Three Vikings scored in double figures led by Bailey Schechinger's 14 points. Jodi Nikkel added 13 points and 5 steals. Jamie Sickles scored 12 and Micah Reed led the team with 5 assists.
Grand View ends it season 23-9.
Mount Mercy will face No. 1 Iowa Wesleyan for the championship game Monday at 7 p.m. in Mount Pleasant.
