The temperature dropped to 18 degrees on Saturday in Des Moines, but the #2 Grand View Vikings stayed hot, advancing to the second round of the NAIA playoffs and moving to 11-0 on the season after a 38-13 victory over #15 Ottawa.
GVU got on the scoreboard first, capitalizing after the Braves muffed a punt. The Braves answered to make the score 7-7 into the second quarter but the Vikings defense changed the tone, dominating the end of the first half.
Senior lineman Blake Goodenbour (Independence, Iowa) made an acrobatic interception in Braves territory that set up a second Mike Perez (Dike, Iowa) touchdown from two yards out to make the score 24-7 at halftime. Perez rushed for 99 yards on 20 carries and two touchdowns.
The Vikings rolled in the second half as they picked up an early score on the opening drive of the third quarter to make it 31-7 GVU. Sophomore quarterback Derek Fulton (Bettendorf, Iowa) completed eight passes for 87 yards while rushing for 98 yards on 13 carries and one score.
Junior quarterback Dorian Ballentine (Des Moines, Iowa) rushed for 87 yards on 12 carries for a score. Senior Brady Roland (Carlisle, Iowa) was the leading receiver for the Vikings, catching five passes for 68 yards in what was a very cold and windy day.
