The Grand View Baseball team picked up a 6-3 win over LSU-Shreveport in the NAIA Tournament in Cleveland, Tennessee on Friday morning to brush off elimination and move on to take on Avila (Mo.) on Friday night.
Hans Losada was on the hill for the Vikings and gave them an early lead as he went smoothly through five innings. In the sixth, Shreveport scored three and took a 3-1 lead.
As they faced that deficit going into the eighth, the Vikings were having a handful with Shreveport starting pitcher Rory Young, who struck out 12 and only failed to strike out one Viking, Evan DeCovich during his outing. That's when Grand View broke through with a string of timely hitting. Matt Miller was brought in to pinch hit to start the inning and walked. Zac Smit and Nick Salentine followed with a singles to load the bases. Soine brought in a run off a sacrifice fly and Blake Marchant tied the game with a single with one out. Zach Little and Micah Loegering both singled as the Vikings scored four in the inning and took a commanding 5-3 lead.
Marchant brought in Smit in the top of the ninth to stretch the lead to 6-3 and Patrick Winnicke closed it out with a three inning outing and his seventh win of the season.
With the win, the fifth-seeded Vikings moved to 26-20 on the season and knocked out the third-seeded LSU-Shreveport team who finished the season 40-18.
The Vikings are back on the field at 5 p.m. Central time and Geoff Conn will have the call as they try to avenge Thursdays loss to fourth-seeded Avila (Mo.)
