The fifth-seeded Grand View baseball team opened up the NAIA tournament against #4 Avila (Mo.) in Cleveland, Tenn. on Thursday. Avila used a big five-run second inning to take a 6-0 lead as the Vikings struggled to score in what ended up a 7-0 win for Avila. GV left 10 runners stranded on base and of its eight hits, had just one multiple-base hit, a double by freshman Evan DeCovich (Apple Valley, Minn.)
DeCovich and freshman Jake Pauley (Clive, Iowa) were 2-of-4 from the plate to lead Grand View offensively.
Senior Joe Ramberg (Stanchfield, Minn.) got the start for Grand View and went and fell to 3-5 on the season with the loss in 1.1 innings pitched. Senior Caleb Phillips (Eden Prairie, Minn.) went 2.2 innings and sophomore Jordan Ross (Urbandale, Iowa) was solid in the final five innings, giving up no runs.
Grand View (25-20) fights for tournament survival on Friday as they take on #3 LSU Shreveport (40-17) at 11 a.m. (CDT). LSU Shreveport is currently ranked No. 24 in the NAIA.
