The Vikings indoor track & field team sent its distance runners to the ISU Open in Ames on Friday and Saturday. It was a successful outing for the ladies who produced four national qualifying marks and a personal best performance.
On Friday, senior Obsie Birru won the seeded 5,000m race with an NAIA automatic qualifying time of 17:47.40. She then anchored the Distance Medley relay team of Kara Keller-Maggie Pestotnik-Betsy Craig and Birru that placed seventh in the NAIA automatic qualifying time of 12:25.12.
Sadie Fisher competed in the non-seeded 5,000m run and completed the race with a personal best time of 19:42.85.
Birru returned to Ames on Saturday to place in three more events. She was fifth in the Mile with an NAIA ‘A" standard mark of 5:05.71, eighth in the 800m run with a ‘B' standard time of 2:20.04 and third in the 1,000m in 3:03.61.
The Viking track & field teams next compete at the Wartburg Lutheran Triangular this Saturday, Jan. 28. Events begin at 10 a.m.
